The debate over whether a potential/current employer can view, or has the right to view, your social media profile as a way to determine employment is still ongoing.
Many argue that using social media is a First Amendment right, and employers therefore cannot engage in social media research on prospective employees. Others disagree, arguing that social media is one of the best ways to determine if an employee is being honest or behaves in a manner that the company wants reflected in its business.
Whatever way you look at it, however, and whether they’ll admit it or not, many companies continue to review social media content when determining who they will hire in the future, as well as monitoring their current employee’s behaviour.
Worse again, some organizations have taken the rather controversial route of monitoring social media and taking snapshots of posts to entice companies to take disciplinary action or even terminate an employee.
